Crowns
What is a crown?
A crown is a “cap” or covering for a tooth that is broken down usually because of decay or fracture.
When is a crown needed?
Often, a crown is necessary when there is not enough tooth structure to support a new filling on a tooth. A crown can also be a proactive way to prevent a tooth from breaking or cracking. Dr. Somers evaluates teeth that have deteriorated to determine if a crown is the best option. Crowns are used to restore a tooth’s size, shape and appearance.
Dental Bridges
What is a fixed dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a restoration with two or more crowns that attach to a false tooth and are anchored by the teeth next to a space in the mouth.
What are the benefits of a dental bridge?
- restores appearance where there was once a missing tooth
- enhances chewing and speaking ability
- prevents natural teeth from shifting into the space
- balances the bite
What are the disadvantages of a dental bridge?
A dental bridge should be used to replace a missing tooth only if the teeth next to the space have a lot of existing dental work. The units of teeth on a bridge are connected which can make it difficult to clean. Dr. Somers frequently offers this service as a last resort when dental implant placement is not possible.
